Recently, I have been thinking and planning out my spring and summer traveling plans. The thought of exploring new places and making unforgettable memories makes me so excited. However, I completely understand that traveling can sometimes feel daunting—especially for those who wear wigs. So I want to share tips to help make the experience as stress-free as possible. I've compiled some tips for anyone planning a trip this season, whether you're heading to the beach, attending a wedding, or going hiking.

Tip #1: Deciding What Wigs You Are Going To Bring

Synthetic styles are popular for travel because they can be easily removed from packaging, shaken out, and worn with minimal effort and restyling. In contrast, human hair tends to develop crimps and flat spots over time. If you prefer human hair styles, we recommend opting for wavy or curly textures like Envy Jordan or Jon Renau Angie. This way, you can simply spray the hair with a little water and use a curl enhancer like Curl Enhancing Pump Spray by HairUWear or an anti-frizzer like the Rene of Paris Revive Liquid Enhancement, then scrunch it to revive the style without the need for excessive products or styling tools.

If you still want to bring a human hair piece but prefer not to have it styled curly or wavy, we have some tips to make the process easier. Alternatively, if you're bringing both human hair and synthetic styles, you could choose to wear your human hair piece while traveling and keep your synthetics in your bag.

When choosing a wig fiber for your next travel adventure, consider selecting one that suits your specific plans. Synthetic wigs are ideal for beach or pool outings because they can withstand pool chemicals and saltwater, and they perform well in the sun for extended periods. On the other hand, human hair styles may not cope as well with these conditions and they tend to fade faster.

Another option to consider is a hat wig. These wigs are lightweight and breathable, making them perfect for outdoor activities like spending time at the beach or hiking.

Tip #2: Packaging Your Wig

Ideally, you can keep your wig in the packaging it came with. However, if you don’t have the packaging anymore, there are multiple different options. If you are packaging a synthetic style you can easily use a plastic bag or – comb out and style your wig to your liking, flip inside out so the cap is showing (this will avoid friction), if your style is longer you can put the excess hair inside of the cap, put the hair net you got with your product overtop (this just keeps everything contained but is not the end of the world if you don’t have one), then place it in the plastic bag and press all the air out. Make sure you either put the tag in with the name and color or label the bag so you know which wig is which. When you put your wig in the bag, make sure you lay the lace front and monofilament flat so it doesn’t bend and damage these features of your wig.

If you are bringing a human hair piece, you can follow all the steps above for synthetic except you will want to put it in a silk bag. Understand, though, when you get to your location you are more than likely going to have to restyle this piece.

If you choose to use a storage bag and hanger, be extremely careful what you put in them. These are great for extensions, but full wigs tend to be a little bit trickier because you don’t want to clamp a lace front or monofilament cap in the hanger, as it will damage it.

Tip #3: Always Bring A Backup Wig

This can be an older piece you have if you want, but this is just in case, for whatever reason, your wig gets lost or damaged during your fun activities and traveling.

Tip #4: Bring Your Hair Products

Consider investing in travel-sized versions of your regular hair care products. For a simple approach, pack only the essentials such as shampoo, conditioner, and detangler such as the BeautiMark 4 Piece Synthetic Travel Must Haves or the Jon Renau Human Hair Travel Kit. and always bring a wide tooth comb (Jon Renau Wide Tooth Comb) However, if you'd like to style your wig more elaborately, you can also try to find smaller sizes of your usual styling products.

Tip #5: Storing Your Wig When You Get To Your Location

You can purchase a collapsible travel wig stand, which is perfect for travel. This is an excellent option to bring along, especially if you have a human hair wig. If it becomes crimped in cold weather, you can place it on the stand while you shower. This will help smooth out the crimps and reshape the style. However, you may still need to restyle your wig afterward. If you have a human hair piece, we highly recommend storing your wigs on the stand when not in use. You can also store synthetic wigs on this stand. If you have a human hair piece, we highly recommend storing your wigs on the stand when not in use. You can also store synthetic wigs on this stand.

Tip #6: Put Your Wig In Your Personal Item

Depending on your travel destination, airport staff or border officers may inspect your bags. By keeping your wig in your personal item, you can take your time repacking without feeling rushed or worrying about damaging it. If you place your wig in your carry-on or checked bag, there’s a risk that it could get lost during travel.

Tip #7: What To Wear On The Actual Traveling Day

Wearing short or medium-length wigs is great for traveling, whether you're walking through the airport or on a road trip. These styles help you avoid friction on the seat, and they are less likely to get tangled when you're putting on and taking off your backpack during security checks.

Disclaimer: There is a very small amount of metal in your wig cap due to elements like combs. It is highly unlikely that you will get stopped by TSA; in fact, we have never heard of anyone being stopped for this reason. However, if you’re concerned, you can explain that you are wearing a wig and request privacy if they ask you to take it off. We do not recommend telling them beforehand, as they may ask you to remove it before screening. Instead, walk through security calmly, and if it comes up, you can address it at that time. Again, the chances of being stopped are extremely slim.

I hope your travel experience becomes less intimidating with these tips. Let us know if you have any questions or if you tried these tips and enjoyed them!
