We’ve got something special to talk about today! Did you know September is Alopecia Awareness Month? In order to honor and celebrate our amazing friends and customers who struggle with this condition and bring more awareness to alopecia, we’re having a contest right here at Name Brand Wigs!! More about the contest in a bit. First, we’re going to talk a bit about what this frustrating, heartbreaking condition is.

 What is Alopecia?

 Simply put, alopecia means hair loss. The medical condition known as alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder. There are three different types, each with a different level of severity:

• Alopecia areata (this involves patches of hair loss)
• Alopecia totalis (this involve a loss of all the hair on the scalp)
• Alopecia universalis (this is a loss of all the hair on your body)

The total loss of all body hair only affects about 5% of the people with alopecia. For some, the hair loss lasts for years and then grows back, but may fall out again; for others, alopecia is a permanent condition. Alopecia is NOT contagious and it is NOT a nervous condition, it happens when the immune system attacks the hair follicles of people who are (usually) otherwise healthy.  We’ll be talking more about alopecia throughout the month of September.
