How to style your synthetic wig

How to Style Your Synthetic Wig

Synthetic Hair Styles are a great option that require very little maintenance and help to get that beautiful hair in little to no time at all. Synthetic wigs are manufactured with a memory fiber that will hold their style even after washing!

For styling, you can simply take it out of the box, give it a good shake to help "waken" those fibers up and you are ready to go. You may simply finger comb or use a wide tooth comb along with a holding spray for any final touches.

To achieve a softer curl to your synthetic wig, you may use a wide tooth comb to brush through the style and apply a holding spray to lock the style in place. If you would like a more defined curl add some styling gel or cream in your hands, rubbing your hands together to warm up the product to make it more malleable, apply to the mid-section - the ends and use your fingers to twirl the hair fibers in the direction of the curl pattern. A little goes a long way!

Top Products For Styling Your Synthetic Wig

Top products for your synthetic wig

When using products be sure you are using products that are made for synthetic hair fibers. Different products will provide different effects. A styling gel will create a more defined, wet curl, while a cream will create a more piecey, matte finish. Be sure to keep hair products such as conditioning spray and detangling spray away from the base materials as this can loosen the hair fibers and can cause shedding and damage to the base materials.

Some of our favorite hair products include the Jon Renau - Fiber Love Holding Spray. This holding spray is designed exclusively for use with synthetic hair and has a long-lasting hold.

The TressTech - Wig Wax Aerosol Spray provides a light hold and is great for adding texture and volume.

BeautiMark - Shaping Creme is great for adding the perfect texture and shape to your style or to tame some of those fly always. Easily fit this sculpting cream in your purse for a quick touch-up.

The BeautiMark - Smooth Detangler helps eliminate tangles & add luster to achieve healthy, effortless movement. This spray has been specially formulated to renew, repair, prolong the life of synthetic fiber.

For the straight, wavy, and curly styles, you may want to try Estetica - Sea Salt Spray. This will help you achieve the windswept piecey volume, define the texture, and give those waves an uplifting boost!

The DL on Heat Defiant Wigs

Heat Friendly Wigs or Heat Defiant Styles are wonderful, as they offer so many ways to wear your hair! A heat friendly wig is pre-styled, but you have the flexibility to curl or flat iron to change the look. Once the style has been changed with heat it will hold, even after washing, and a heat source must be used again to change it. The fiber also tends to have a coarse, moldable texture versus your standard synthetic wig.

When using heat tools on heat friendly wigs, be sure to set your styling tools between 270-280 degrees Fahrenheit. Although heat friendly wigs can be heat styled, they only withstand a lower grade of heat for styling. Be sure to also use a heat thermal spray to further protect the hair fibers. When styling, only use a wide tooth comb. This will protect the fibers from stretching and frizzing.

The Jon Renau Heat Treat Thermal Spray is heat activated and excellent when used with flat irons, curling irons, hot and velcro rollers. This non-sticking thermal protectant and styling spray prevents hair damage by permitting a clean release from styling tools. Hair is left brush-able and volumized.

How to curl your synthetic wig

Curling Your Heat Friendly Wig

We recommend pinning your style on a block head by placing a few T-Pins into the ear tabs as well as at the nape. Be sure you are not pinning into any other base materials as this can be damaging. Once secure, you will want to use a wide tooth comb along with a detangler spray to assure that there are no tangles. Apply 3-5 pumps of the detangler spray focusing on the mid lengths to the ends and section off the hair. Smaller sections will create tighter curls while large sections will create more loose curls. Make sure your curling iron is set to 280 degrees Fahrenheit for this process. Now, start at the nape, take a section of hair to be curled and spray with the heat treat thermal spray to protect the fibers from the styling tool. Curl up the section of hair, staying 1-2 inches away from the base and hold for 10-15 seconds. You will then release the curl into the palm of your hand and gather up towards base and pin curl to the base. Repeat this process until all fibers have been styled and let the curls cool completely. Once they are cooled, remove the clips, and let curls fall naturally. Use a wide tooth comb and a little holding spray as needed to complete your look!

How-To Flat Iron Your Heat Friendly Wig

As mentioned in curling your style, this process is much easier to achieve by pinning your style on a block head. Always make sure that your heat is no higher than 280 degrees Fahrenheit. Now you are ready! Clip the hair fiber up in small sections, starting at the nape, create 1-inch sections and spray 2-3 pumps of heat thermal spray from the mid-section down to the ends. Try to avoid the root/base material. This will help protect those fibers and keep them looking new and beautiful! Next use your flat iron, take the 1 inch section and flat iron down while following behind with a wide tooth comb. Repeat 2-3 times to give the section a smooth finish and continue to do with each section until the style is complete. Once you are done, add a little holding spray if necessary and your style is ready to go!
