Care Questions

How should I store my wig?

Many like to store their wig on a stand, hanger, or mannequin head. If you leave your wig in the wig box, make sure to take it out and give it a good shake every so often to avoid cold set.

Can I cut my wig?

Yes, your piece can be cut or thinned out. We always recommend you go to a stylist with experience in altering wigs.

Can I color my hairpiece?

Synthetic or Heat Friendly fiber will not take color. Human Hair can be colored, but we recommend staying within a level or two of the original color.

Will heat affect my wig?

Synthetic hair can be damaged beyond repair if it gets too close to a heat source, this could be even from a cooking oven in your home. Heat Friendly fiber can withstand a low amount of heat from styling tools as long as you keep it around 250-280 degrees. Human hair can be styled with heating tools the same as bio hair.

How often should I wash my wig?

Every 6-8 wears is a good rule of thumb.

Can I use regular shampoo on my wig?

You will want to use products formulated specifically for wigs. Other products can have chemicals that are too harsh or will wear the fiber out quicker.

How long will my synthetic wig last?

The time frame can vary greatly depending on care and lifestyle. Typically, with proper maintenance your wig will last around 3 to 6 months.  Having more than one wig to rotate between will help prolong the lifespan of your wig.

What options do I have for securing my wig down?

The Hair Grip is a soft band that helps keep your wig in place. As well as toupee clips, double sided tape, and lace front glue.

My head is sweating, what can I do?

A 100% capless wig will be very breathable during the hot summer months. The Headline It is a sweat eliminating liner to be worn inside your wig cap.

Choosing A Wig

Beginner Basics

A beginner's guide to finding the perfect wig for women and men at Name Brand Wigs.

1. Identify the coverage needed.

The first step is determining what type of product is best for you. Here at Name Brand Wigs we have an array of options, but if you are not ready or not looking for a full wig then we carry top pieces, ¾ wigs, extensions, and halos. You can check out all of our wig additions here.

2. Find your fit!

Sizing is important and can make a world of difference when it comes to comfort. The majority of the wigs we carry will have adjustable straps on the inside. However, it is still important to know where to start. We have a helpful chart and video to show you how to measure your head, and decide what category you fall into. If you find yourself in between two categories, choose the larger size. The front of a wig should be worn where your natural hairline would start, and you should use the ear tabs inside the wig to line it up. Click here for our measurement video.
Pro Tip: You will notice a difference in the fit from brand to band. Many agree that brands like Raquel Welch or Belle Tress average sized caps tend to have a good amount of stretch, whereas Amore or Ellen Wille tend to have a smaller average with a tighter fit. Keep in mind wigs will typically loosen up a bit over time and wear. There are also great options for extra security and comfort such as: double sided tapes, toupee clips, and hair grips which can be found on our Accessory Page

3. Identify your cap needs:

The cap is the base of the wig onto which hair is attached. Wigs are available with several different types of caps, and each cap type has its own distinct advantages. The four cap designs are Capless, Standard, 100% Hand Tied, and Monofilament.

Monofilament Caps
Double Mono Top

Read our blog post on cap types that explains the differences further!

4. Find the right fiber!

Alternative Hair fiber can be categorized into the following: Synthetic, Heat Defiant or Heat Friendly, Human Hair, Remy Human Hair, or Human Hair Blend. See the charts below for the descriptions of each fiber type.

Synthetic Fiber:
Wigs made primarily of modacrylic fibers that have the look and feel of real hair. This fiber is very low maintenance and convenient. The fibers have built in memory which allows the original style to be restored after washing.

Heat Friendly or Heat Defiant:
A synthetic fiber that can withstand a low amount of heat. A heat friendly wig is pre-styled, but you have the flexibility to curl or flat iron to change the look. Once the style has been changed with heat it will hold, even after washing, and a heat source must be used again to change it. The fiber also tends to have a coarser, moldable texture than standard synthetic.

Human Hair:
Wigs made of human hair are primarily cut in India and China. Wigs made with Human Hair are very durable, and can withstand heat and products just like bio hair. However, they require more upkeep than synthetic wigs and must be styled on a regular basis. Generally speaking, Human Hair wigs are much heavier than their Synthetic counterpart, and will typically hold up longer.

Remy Human Hair:
Human hair that has not been weakened by stripping. Unlike most human hair used in wigs and hairpieces, Remy hair is created by careful processing which leaves the cuticle in place. The result is stronger, superior hair. To avoid tangling, Remy hair strands must all be aligned so the cuticle runs in the same direction. Remy hair is more expensive than cuticle-free human hair.

Human Hair Blend:
A blend of human hair and heat friendly fibers. These wigs should be cared for as a heat friendly item as they are typically composed of a much higher percentage of heat friendly fibers.

Pro Tip:  The key to finding the right fiber is to consider your lifestyle and how much time you want to put into styling and maintaining your alternative hair. Each fiber has pros and cons, consider the pros and cons to find the hair fiber that best fits who YOU are!

5. Determine what Style and Length you are looking for:

We have a huge selection, equaling thousands of options. This can be a bit overwhelming to a new wig wearer. Take advantage of the filtering on our website to narrow down our styles by length, hair texture, or cap features. A great place to start is our customer’s favorite page. You can trust these are tried and true favorites, as they are the wigs getting the best reviews from other wig wearers like you!

Check out our face shape blog for recommendations on what style types will work best with your face shape.

6. Find your color!

Once you have a style narrowed down, you will know what your color options are, as each brand makes their own set of colors. We have online color swatches as guides for all colors. If you would like to see the swatches in person you can order a color ring here.

It’s awesome to see how big and supportive the online wig community has become over the years. Social media and YouTube are great resources for finding additional information. We review many of our products to help you get a better idea of color and style right out of the box here on our YouTube Channel.
If you would like further ideas as to what colors will best compliment your skin tone, check out our color tone guide here. You can also read our color tone blog for more information!

7. Get the proper care products

√ Checklist

How To Choose A Style

1. Your Face-Shape

You want to choose a style that accentuates your best features.

Our guide to discovering your face shape - Wigs and Face Shapes | NameBrandWigs.com

Our Blog with Photo Reference to your face shape. Summer Short Cut | NameBrandWigs.com

PRO TIP  When choosing a style pay attention to the face shape of the model or reviewer you are looking at. We often make the mistake of thinking a style will look the exact same as it did on the model, the reality is we have our own unique beauty and that is what we want to keep in mind!

2. Choosing the Right Hair Fiber

Knowing what type of hair fiber you want can make all the difference when choosing a style. The main variations of fiber are: Synthetic, Heat Defiant, and Human Hair. Depending on your lifestyle you will probably prefer one of these options over another.

Synthetic Fiber = are modacrylic fibers that have the look and feel of real hair. Synthetic hair has the ability to return to its original hair pattern after washing.

Heat Friendly or Heat Defiant = a synthetic fiber that can take a low amount of heat. Once heat is used on the style it will hold even after washing. Heat will need to be used again to change the hair pattern.

Human Hair = Durable and versatile, real human hair that can withstand heat just as bio hair can. Human hair will need to be re-styled after washing.

>> Want to read more in depth about fiber, Remy Human Hair, Or Human Hair Blends - check out Section 4 in our Beginner Basics | NameBrandWigs.com

PRO TIP  The type of fiber, Heat Defiant or Synthetic - etc.. are broad terms that spread amongst manufacturers, but as you become a wig expert you will start to notice that the thickness of the fiber can also vary amongst manufacturers.

3. Cap Size

Get the wrong cap size and you may find your wig sliding up off your forehead or being so tight that you end up with a head-ache. Below is a chart to help know where you fall:

>> Need to know how to measure? Click here for our measurement video.

4. Cap Construction

Do I need Capless, Standard, Monofilament, or 100% Hand-Tied?

This becomes important for making your wig look like the most natural fit on you. Cap construction also will have an impact on your daily styling needs or preferences. For instance if you are wanting to change the part on your wig then you will want either a mono/monofilament part or mono/monofilament top.

Quick Overview:

Capless (or Open Cap) = light-weight and cool, not as versatile for styling

Standard (or Traditional Cap) = gives lots of volume, durable, not as easy to change the part

Monofilament (or Mono) = realistic looking, able to change the part, not as much permatease

100% Hand-Tied = every strand is hand sewn into the cap giving ultimate versatility.

How To Choose A Wig Color

(Styles Shown Left to Right: Maxwella 22" in Chocolate with Caramel, Miranda in 32F, Cheyenne in Rose Gold-R)

6 Tips For Choosing a Wig Color

If you have been a part of the wig world for any amount of time you will soon realize that there are an... abundance of color options, and that is probably an understatement. Ranging from beige blondes, to burgundy browns, and everything in between, you are sure to find a color that you adore. But, How? That is the real question. It isn’t as bad as you think, and with a little persistence and help from our team you will be able to find something suitable to your needs!

1. What do all of the numbers mean?

Many of the manufacturer’s will use a number system to describe their color line, others choose to give the colors a name, and then some will use both. Generally, a common base knowledge of the number system is a fantastic start to knowing what you are looking for. So... we made you a chart that is pretty helpful, I must say. Keep in mind this is a general guideline for the color numbers, and manufacturers will still use creative license to vary from the chart.

48 - Light Brown with Light Grey Blend

56 - Silver Grey

60 - True White

As an example: Jon Renau’s color 6/33 will be a base color of 6 (Dark to Medium Brown) and then has a highlight blend of 33 (Dark Burgundy).

2. OK, what about color names?

Numbers can be a lot to remember and we believe that is why many manufacturers have switched to giving the color options, names. For example: Shaded Praline is a color name by Jon Renau and this one happens to also have the number name 12FS8.

Most of the color names are descriptive in some fashion, but sometimes you are going to want the details of the color mix. Getting the right color after all, is what we want for you! To break it down, there are color charts for every brand with a description for each color. Many times their descriptions will give you exactly what the color is made of and the highlighting it has.

Example: If you were to look up the color Shaded Praline in our color chart by Jon Renau this is the description you would get: Light golden brown, light natural golden blond, and pale natural gold blond blend with medium brown roots.

Now, where can the color charts be found...

3. Color Chart Locations?

These color charts that we spoke about can be located in a couple places! The first will be right on every product page:

All you have to do is click on Color Chart and it will bring up the color chart for the brand associated with the style you are viewing. Then scroll to find your color and get all the details!

The 2nd location is at the top on our menu bar under the tab Colors. It will be categorized by brand, so make sure to take note of which brand you are searching!  Color Charts | NameBrandWigs.com

4. Expert Tips For Choosing Color

Color is a beautiful thing and brings so much personality to our style! We believe finding a color that suits your personality and features will make you feel like you're walking the runway every day.

Here are a couple tricks to use that will help you find something in your niche.

Trick #1 Color Undertones:

Notice that some colors will be either warm, cool, or neutral toned. This can help you figure out what tends to look best on you and how it compliments your skin’s undertone. Typically as a rule, you will want a color that matches your undertones because those colors will bring out more radiance in your appearance.

As a little “cheat sheet” we categorized our top brands with their top ten colors into cool, warm, or neutral: Color Tone Guide | NameBrandWigs.com

Trick #2 Model Color:

The model is always wearing a color and there is a chance it is the color you are looking for. Find the name of the color shown on every product page.

Trick #3 YouTube!:

The wig world has grown vastly and so many people are willing to share their hair knowledge to help you with your journey. YouTube has created an environment that allows you to get the latest reviews and details on your style. We suggest taking a look at a YouTube video or review of your style and/or color. There is nothing quite like a picture, so a video is even better, right?!

When Searching For a Review - Notice the lighting you are seeing the wig in (natural or in-doors will look different). Also, note the reviewer’s face shape and skin tone because it is likely different from yours.

A couple of our favorite reviewers are Let’s Talk With Kim, Hey Wig Sister, or Wear Wigs With Me.

And of course you could always check out our channel, Name Brand Wigs.

5. Order a Color Ring?

If you are wanting a tangible sample of hair then this is a great option. Our color rings give you a small swatch of hair displaying each color. Color Rings are divided by brands and are fully refundable upon return, you just cover the shipping! Color Rings | NameBrandWigs.com

Wig Care Guides

Heat Friendly Care
Congratulations! Heat Friendly hairpieces can be a wonderful investment and are a great way to be able to customize your style. Having a heat friendly style can also provide a unique and different journey than your other synthetic pieces. This guide will go through the basics of taking care of your heat friendly piece.

How to correctly care for your heat friendly hair might be the most important key to the longevity of it. If you follow these directions and tips, it should be smooth sailing form here!

Make sure to use a wide tooth comb. Wire brushes strip heat-friendly fibers of their properties, making them deteriorate a lot faster than normal and they become more susceptible to damage. Using a brush also pulls the fiber down, and when it springs up it frizzes and tangles with fibers around it. Instead, use a wide tooth comb! These are much safer for regular synthetics as well.

It is very important to be gentle. Heat friendly fiber is prone to tangling and doesn’t react to friction well. To help with that, try to limit the friction on your style. For example, try to use your fingers to brush and manipulate, versus using a comb all the time.

A good thing to do is to check your wig after every wear. Due to the delicate nature of this fiber, it is important to check it after every wear in order to prevent tangling and frizzing. The nape and any place that touches your body or clothing is the most vulnerable to friction and thus, tangling. If you notice tangling, make sure to tend to it right away. Mist 3-5 pumps around the wig, or directly target the affected area with Jon Renau’s HD Smooth Detangler. Focus on the ends and nape, and stay away from any hand tied portions of the cap. Conditioners and detanglers will loosen knots and can cause hair loss in any hand tied areas. Use a wide tooth comb to remove any tangles, starting at the ends, and work your way up to the base of the cap.

Try an updo! With long wigs, be creative with your styling every once in a while to limit the friction of the wig against your clothing and neck. This will help minimize the frizzing. For example, braid the long hair, put it into a low pony, or a nice low bun to minimize the movement on your neck and back.

Lastly, we recommend storing your wigs either on a stand, mannequin head, or if need be, in the original box.  Ideally, your wig will be stored with the hair fibers falling in a natural manner, and not being tousled, tangled, or rubbed frequently.

We recommend washing your piece every six to ten wears. While washing the style helps clean the wig and revive some of the curls and pattern, heat friendly fibers tend to be more susceptible to friction and frizzing during the process. Limiting the times you wash your wig will improve the longevity.

As said earlier, avoid conditioner on your monofilaments or lace fronts. Conditioner is meant to detangle, and will loosen the hand knotting, which can cause strands to eventually shed from your lace front or monofilament.

Another thing to avoid is brushing the hairpiece when it is still wet. This will stretch the fiber when it is in a compromised state.

Use shampoo and conditioner made specifically for synthetic wigs. This will keep your hairpiece looking their best. Regular shampoos and conditioners have added sulfates, chemicals, and dyes that can damage synthetic and processed human hair. If you want to ensure that you’re getting the intended lifespan out of your style, make sure to use the correct products for that hair type.

Lastly, no setting is necessary after you wash the piece; curls will snap back into position when the hairpiece is completely dry. Make sure to store hair similar to the way it is to be worn.

Heat Friendly products are able to withstand a low amount of heat from styling tools. Always be aware of your styling tool's settings and do not go above 280 degrees.

Before you dive in to restyle your heat friendly wig, keep in mind it is extremely difficult to get the original style back. Once you alter the style with heat, it will stay in that style, even if you wash it, it will stay in the style it was heat baked to.

Something to keep in mind is heat styling your heat friendly wig will take longer than styling normal bio hair. When curling the hair, it is recommended to hold the curl in place until the fiber cools. If you let it go right away, the curl will cool in a flat position.

As said earlier, make sure to only use products specifically suited to synthetic hair fiber. We highly suggest using Jon Renau's Heat Defiant Smooth Detangler anytime you are wearing a heat friendly piece. We also recommend using a heat protectant when using heat to style your piece. This will prevent frizzing and will help your ends stay looking their best!

Below we have a video that breaks down what products we recommend and the process that is best for using heating tools for your heat friendly hair. The video goes through straightening the hair and curling it.

Lace Front Care

    1. What is a Lace Front Wig?

The lace front is a nearly invisible mesh-like material that lays across your hairline. Lace fronts provide a very natural and seamless look because each hair is sewn into the mesh and thus provides a skin-like appearance at the hairline. This feature is well loved and many manufacturers now provide a lace front on their wigs.

        2. Benefits of a Lace Front Wig?

Lace front wigs give the most natural hairline and help you to confidently wear your style off-the-face or with face framing layers. Many of our wigs have ready-to-wear lace fronts. This simply means that the lace is measured and already cut to the perfect length so you don’t have to cut it yourself!

Whether you suffer from hair loss due to chemo-therapy, premature balding, alopecia, hair thinning, or if you are just looking to switch up your hair style, a lace front can help you feel comfortable in your wig.

How to Care for a Lace Front Wig

Taking care of your lace front will help the longevity of your wig and maintain its’ natural look. Lace fronts are made out of a gentle lace mesh that you will want to treat delicately.

            3. Helpful Don'ts:

Never pull on your lace front. If you pull on the lace front it is going to stretch the lace out and create gapping at your forehead. Pulling at the lace front could also begin to wear away at the lace mesh to the point of fraying. A better option when adjusting your wig would be to use the ear tabs to move the wig for a more comfortable fit.

Never get conditioner on the lace front (or on any knotting in a wig cap). Conditioner is meant to de-tangle and will loosen the hand knotting. This can eventually cause strands to shed from your lace front and you will notice hair loss.

When brushing and washing your hair remember to keep it gently around the lace front. It is OK if you get some soap on the lace front, especially if you are trying to wash off some makeup!

                4. Finding Some Lace Front Discomfort?

There are a couple things that you can do to make sure your lace front is working for you. The first is to always make sure you have the right wig cap size. A wig cap that is too large or too small can cause discomfort because it then rubs against your forehead. Check out our video on how to properly measure for the right cap fit:

                    5. Secure Your Lace Front Down

Sometimes you may want a little extra security with your lace front. There are several great ways to make sure your lace front is staying put! A couple of tricks of the trade are to use either glue or tape to fasten it down. This can also help with lace front discomfort and prevent that friction on your forehead.

Lace Front Tape:  Very easy to use, this double sided sticky tape comes in a roll that you are able to easily cut to the desired length. When using tape you are able to stick it directly onto your forehead or the lace front itself.

Adhesive:  “It Stays” by Jon Renau is a gentle roll-on adhesive that washes off with water. This product provides a nice secure hold while being easily removed.

Brandywine also has an adhesive product that is more like a glue stick that you are able to dab onto your lace front. With this product you will also need Brandywine’s Lace Front Adhesive Remover.

                        6. Other Considerations

Pro Tip:  Applying a little baby powder or dry shampoo to your forehead, underneath the lace front, can help with preventing irritation from the lace.

Makeup such as foundation or powder can really help the lace front blend with your skin tone. This also gives your front hairline a softer finish.

If you would like to cut your lace front further, or if you would like to cut a section that has started to fray you should always use a Pinking Shear to do so.

The lace front keeps advancing but if you are still finding that you don’t prefer this feature then we would suggest taking a look at monofilament or hand tied wigs without a lace front.

With a few tricks and tips you can wear your new hair with confidence and the assurance that you truly are looking fabulous. Working in the wig industry there are so many tips out there, and we took the time to narrow the options to our Top 5 Tips to wearing your wig naturally. These tips have been tried and tested by our loving customers and NBW family.

                          1. Rock n’ Roll

Your wig has arrived, the box is in hand and you are popping the cover open. The color is wonderful, check. Fiber feels nice, check. And now to try it on. As you take a glance in the mirror you begin to notice there is something funny with how the hair is lying. Perhaps a slightly awkward poof on one side, while the other side is a little flatter. You were loving everything.. up to that point.

We have all been there, tried a wig on and really begun to question our decision. We would like to say, “don’t worry” but fear that’s already happening, so instead we will give you one of our tried-and-true tips: Pull the wig back off and give it a good shake. Sounds simple, and it is, but the reason it is so important is because the fibers need to be woken up. Keep in mind your style has been sitting in a box for some time and the fibers have been confined to one position. The only precaution would be to stay on the gentle side while shaking.

After a good shake pop the wig back on, try adjusting the part a little, and notice how much more lively your piece looks. Now you’re ready to Rock n’ Roll! This is an easy step that should have you ready to go in a flash, but if not, there are a couple other tricks you can try.

                          2. Friction, The Underrated Secret

Along with a good shake to wake the fiber up, there may also be a little taming that you want to do in areas. Our natural hair is typically going to have fly-aways and some baby hairs going this direction and that. Besides the “natural” messiness going on though, there may be a few areas you would like to tame such as the sides or top of your style.

If you have a heat friendly or human hair piece then you will easily be able to manipulate the fibers with a heat tool. The story isn’t the same with synthetic styles because they are not able to withstand heat and instead you will end up with a melted pile of fiber.

There is a little trick to working around this issue and it’s called friction. For the areas you need to tame, start by rubbing your bare hands together swiftly to create a slight friction that will heat up your hands. Once your hands are warm press them against the area you want to tame. This will calm the fibers down and can work wonders along the sides or even along your part. If there are a lot of fly-aways then you can also use this method to help those lie flat. Sometimes you may have to do this a couple times and just play with it a little to find what works best for you.

                          3. We All Love To Shine… but too much?

We do all love to have that glow effect, but how much is too much? When it comes to hair, a really shiny wig can tend to look unnatural. A brand new wig right out of the box can also have a sheen for various reasons. Some manufacturers have more or less of a sheen depending on the creation and preservation process used. Typically, this sheen will be gone with a wash or two, but if you’re finding that is still not enough then we recommend this simple trick. Focus on the roots and top layer of hair, take some dry shampoo and gently spray your style. This works wonders and instantly takes away that fake sheen. We do recommend using a dry shampoo that is made for synthetic wigs, and one of our favorites is Jon Renau’s dry shampoo: Pick Me Up Dry Shampoo

                          4. Designed For You

The age of wigs is surprisingly historic and originated in Ancient Egypt. Ranging throughout culture in Greece, Rome, England, and ending back in popularity today in modern culture. It is fascinating to see how advanced the construction of fiber design and cap construction has come. One very important factor in choosing and wearing a wig naturally will be the cap construction. Lace fronts help create a seamless hairline, while monofilament features help create a natural looking part resembling hair growth out of the scalp.

For monofilament features you can get a Mono Part, Mono Top, or even a fully Hand-Tied wig.

Want to read more in depth about cap construction? Check out this article: 5 Wig Cap Designs & Their Importance

Expert Tip: Wig Cap placement is another key in making your style look natural. You want the top of the wig or the lace front to start right at your natural hairline. If it is further back or forward it can make the wig look out of place and fake. Also use the ear tabs to make sure the wig is on straight, the tabs should fall just above your ears.

                          5. Know your Bio Hair

If we think about bio hair there are a few natural tendencies it has. For instance, we all have that friend with curls and volume or another with straight and silky hair, but whatever their look it is a natural byproduct of their DNA and is specific to them. One of the most natural ways to wear a wig is by keeping it similar to your bio hair.

If your bio hair was super thick and dense then perhaps consider shopping brands that have those denser fibers and plenty of volume. On the other hand if you have finer hair then you may want to shop brands that have a little less volume and a thinner fiber. Be sure to call us if you have any questions about the differences between brands and their fibers.

Rooted colors may be another option to help your wig look natural. Bio hair has a gradient to it and as hair grows it becomes lighter at the bottom either due to sun exposure or other elements while remaining darkest at the top. By choosing a rooted color you are also able to change between colors more easily and keep it looking natural because the root is always close to the same darkness.

                          Final Thoughts

In the grand scheme of it all, a little practice makes perfect, and as cliché as that sounds it really does help when it comes to wigs. Taking the time to work with your wig and learn the ins-and-outs is a game changer. From color tone, to density, cap construction, and using the right products, we are convinced there is an engaging style for you.
